New Year - New Me!

Many people set New Year’s Resolutions that are unachievable... in turn, this can lead to negative feelings and self-talk, and may even stop us from trying to make healthy changes in the future.

With 2020 approaching fast, we want to help you make this year different. We want to share our ‘secret sauce’ recipe to help you smash those goals out of the park! We want to help you achieve what you set out to do.

There are a few key steps to success...

Set small, achievable goals that you can include in your daily life. Then set another one to achieve the next day and the one after that... Each of these daily mini goals need to contribute to a bigger focus, which is measurable. For example, setting your goal to simply ‘get fit’ is difficult to measure as it is too broad. However, walking for 30 minutes per day, participating in a weekly group exercise class and/or swimming 20 laps of the pool, provide a clearer way to measure your success.

You may want to set yourself a marathon event as your end goal to ‘getting fit’. This might be signing up for a charity run/walk or another physical challenge. Whatever you decide as your end point, you can break it down to achievable daily tasks which are easy to measure and will keep you motivated.

Now you have an achievable and measurable goal (with daily tasks to help you achieve it), we can move onto the secret ingredient... our recipe for the ‘secret sauce’. It is much more than just motivation and interest, it’s what gets you up in the morning, has you laughing, crying and everything in between.

Yep, it’s your emotions! Find an emotional attachment to your goal - ask yourself “What will it really mean to me when I achieve the goal?” Take your time, this one is important.

Once you have your answer, we need to completely flip it and reverse it. You see, that question is very much a ‘destination’ type question. It looks at the result of your goal. This is where most people fail. They don’t consider the journey it truly takes to get there.

You now need to ask yourself, “What will it mean to me to be one step closer each day?” Here, you are thinking about the reasons WHY you want to set this goal.

Finally, take some time to think about the support you need to achieve your New Year’s Resolution.

If you need some professional help, want a little guidance and maybe even just a prod in the right direction, then you know where we are!
